Serra shoots for 2-0 against Lytle

Former welterweight champion Matt “The Terra” Serra is set to meet Chris “Lights Out” Lytle at UFC 119 on September 25, 2010, at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. In their previous bout, Serra won a three round split decision that many fans and fighters believed to be a close call. A win for Serra would silence any doubts that he is indeed the better fighter, while a win for Lytle would prove that he has what it takes to beat Serra and avenge one of his UFC losses.

Lytle has become an extremely versatile fighter and tough competitor in the last few years. His stand-up and submission skills have greatly improved, he still has never been knocked out, and his only TKO losses are due to cuts. All of this together makes Lytle a formidable match for anyone who is put in front of him.

Serra, the likeable “wise-guy,” has a number of skills in his toolbox as well. He has an excellent Jiu-Jitsu game, holding a black belt from Renzo Gracie and lots of power in both hands. He’s also quite versatile and is good at moving while he’s on his feet. Serra is also eager to do what it takes to put himself back into title contention, and a win over Lytle could do exactly that.

Due to the fact that both of these fighters have incredibly good ground games and wrestling that is also nearly equal, this fight may end up being a stand-up war. Serra likes to keep things on the feet as long as he feels comfortable and Lytle is no stranger to swinging. However, if either fighter feels that they are getting the worse end of the stand-up they may choose to take things down to the canvas. Both fighters need a win to jump back in the race against Georges St-Pierre, increasing the motivational factor. Expect fireworks while the fight is standing and a potentially exciting grappling match if things go to the floor.
